What happened to Chan?

During the last weekend there was also the Japan Open. I was really looking forward the battle between Chan, Plushenko and Takahashi. It didn't turn out much of a battle at all. Both Chan and Plushenko were a bit off, but most of all Chan.

Chan fell four times in his new free program and the the rest of the jumps weren't quite perfect either. It was like his jumping technique suddenly dissapeared during the summer. Earlier this spring he had parted ways with his coach Christy Krall and choreographer Lori Nichol. Maybe all of this has affected his preparation? Krawl is known as a very good technician and I think she put Chan to work really hard. In the end it was too much for him.

In the inerview after the competition Chan told he lacked motivation and didn't feel good. He thinks this will end up positive because now he will find back his motivation again. Here you can read the rest of his interview.

After reading several interviews with him I sort of get a feeling that he often has struggled with motivation problems. He has complained for example how expensive the sport is for his parents (they organize a local fundraiser every year to collect money for his training). I also think that it might bother him that he hasn't quite gathered a similar fan base as many other top skaters.

The most surprising for me were his PCS. They were lower than Plushenko's, Buttle's or Takahashi. In the result list he was last. Normally his falls don't affect his PCS and maybe this was just an exception?

I still think he will come back stronger and be back on the podium. But will the GP's come too soon?

Nizzassa olisin toivonut Takahashin olevan korkeimmalla korokkeella.

    1. Chan voittaa usein PCS- ja ja GOE-pisteiden avulla. Nizzassa olisin minäkin laittanut Daisuken ykköseksi.

  2. You're right, Taka had no rivals at JO, although I found Buttle in great shape, if you think that he is the only skater of the 12 at JO who isn't training for Olympic-eligible competition, and he placed third!
Plushenko made several mistakes, but it is also true that he didn't compete for 10 months and his goal was having two quads in one program. This was warm-up, we'll see what he'll do in the first real competition. I'm sure he'll be ready for the battle. ;)
I must admit that I'm not a fan of Chan. The fact is, I don't feel anything when he's on the ice. That's purely subjective, and I don't deny his skills. But I think he lacks constancy. The fact he admitted of lacking motivation but that he will find it back is a proof.
About how expensive this sport is for skaters parents, Lambiel's parents needed help to pay his training and some people from his village got toghether and helped paying for the figure skating season. But maybe, as you say, the fact is that it bothers him not having gathered a similar fan base as many other top skaters: in an interview he declared feeling more Chinese and not appreciated enough in Canada... Even if I thought judges were his biggest fans. Falls affect every skaters score, but not his. Maybe it's time falls are falls fore evrybody.
But that's a problem of who judges, not Chan's. Chan's problem now is gaining constancy, and gaining it before the GP.

    1. Good post, we have a lot of similar thoughts :) I doubt Chan will ever gain a wide fan base, mostly because many people think he is judged unfairly. It is also strange how much he can fall in every program, it is quite unusual for any successful skater.

    2. Yes, I think the same on both points. I think we have to wait and see what the GP will bring us... ;)
